The old Silent Giant experienced a reasonably regular rubber diaphragm pump inside of a tin can buried in fine gravel inside the plastic case. The aged ones can even now be rebuilt and come up on eBay sometimes. I wouldn’t feel that could well be causing you a lot of problems. It’s undoubtedly over the top end for tropical fish although. I'd
